Meta Conversions API – FAQ and Common Issues

FAQ and Common Issues

The Meta Conversions API (CAPI) integration is used to optimise your Facebook Lead Ad campaigns, improving lead quality while reducing cost per qualified lead. It works by sending lead quality signals back to Meta to train their ad algorithms on which leads are good for your business, so your campaigns can be optimised to maximise the number of high-quality conversion leads.

Here are the most common issues or inquiries when setting up Meta Conversions API in Privyr and how to fix them:

I’m updating the Lead Stages of the Facebook leads in Privyr, but the events are not getting sent to Meta

If you update a Facebook lead’s Lead Stage in Privyr but don’t see the events in Meta Events Manager, please check the following to resolve the issue:

1. Make sure that you’re actually updating the Lead Stage of a Facebook lead in Privyr

  • Note that the Meta Conversions API integration only works for leads from Facebook Lead Ads

2. Meta Conversions API is enabled

  • Go to the Automations tab on the Privyr web.
  • Under Lead Automations, select Meta Conversions API.
  • Tap Enable CAPI and connect your Facebook Lead Ads to Privyr if you haven’t already
    • This lets you instantly and automatically receive new leads from Meta Lead Ads into your Privyr account

3. Start updating the Lead Stage of new Facebook leads in your Privyr account:

  • This can be done from the Privyr mobile app or Privyr web, and trains the Meta ads algorithm on which leads are good for your business
  • Keep updating the LEAD STAGE field as each lead progresses, and also on past Facebook leads received within the last 90 days.

4. Check that you’re looking at the correct Dataset on Meta Events Manager

When you connect your Facebook account to Privyr, Meta automatically creates a new Dataset for each Facebook Page. Events are sent to that Dataset only.

To check the connected Dataset :

  1. Go to your Meta Conversions API page in Privyr
  2. Tap on View Pages and Datasets
  3. Select the Facebook Page

Once routed in Meta Events Manager, open Overview to see the events sent back to Meta at the bottom of the page.

Dataset isn’t showing when setting up a new Ad Set

If you aren’t able to find or select the correct Dataset (named ‘<Page_Name> Event Data’) when configuring your Ad Set for qualified leads optimisation, it may be because your Ad Account does not have permissions to access the Dataset.

This can be solved by sharing the Dataset with your ad account(s), via the following steps:

  1. On Privyr web, click on your Profile Photo > Settings under the top-right menu
  2. Under Settings in the left column, click on Meta Conversions API to open the Meta Conversions API settings page
  3. Under Connected Facebook Pages, click on the Facebook Page you want to run conversion-optimised ads on.
  4. This will open the Dataset named ‘<Page_Name> Event Data’ directly in Meta Events Manager
  5. Click on the Settings tab of the Dataset
  6. Under Sharing > Ad accounts, click on ‘Share with an ad account‘
  7. This will lead you to Datasets & Pixels under your Business Portfolio. Re-select the correct Dataset from the list if needed
  8. Click on the Connected Assets tab under the Dataset
  9. Click on Connect Assets, then select Other Business Assets, check the ad account(s) that you want to grant access to, and click ‘Add’

You can also follow the entire step via this link: Sharing Dataset Permissions with your Ad Account

When clicking on the View Datasets & Pages under Privyr’s Meta Conversions API settings, I get redirected to Meta Events Manager, but I’m not seeing the Dataset on the list

If View Datasets & Pages redirects you to Meta Events Manager but the Dataset isn’t on the list or shows an error, the Dataset may not be shared with your Business Portfolio.

To fix this:

  1. Open the Business Portfolio in Meta where the Dataset is connected.
  2. Go to Datasets and Pixels.
  3. Under the Dataset, tap Assign Partner.
  4. Select your account and enable full access to manage the events Dataset.
  5. Tap Assign Asset.
  6. Go back to your own Business Portfolio, open Datasets and Pixels, and accept the request under the shared Dataset.

Note: If you don’t have access to the Business Portfolio where the Dataset is connected, contact the owner of the Business Portfolio to grant your Business Portfolio access to the Dataset.

Ad Account isn’t showing when trying to share permissions with the Dataset

If your Ad Account doesn’t appear when you try to share the Dataset, you may need full access to it from the connected Business Portfolio.

To do this:

  1. Go to your Meta Business Portfolio.
  2. Go to Settings and tap Ad accounts.
  3. Select the Ad Account and tap Assign Partner.
  4. Click Invite new Partner and paste your Business Portfolio ID.
  5. Tap Next, then choose Ad Accounts under Select asset type.
  6. Select the Ad Account and enable full access.
  7. Click Next, then Confirm.

Note: If you don’t have access to the Business Portfolio where the Ad Account is connected, contact the owner of the Business Portfolio to grant your Ad Account access to the Business Portfolio.

“Maximise number of qualified leads” Performance Goal is not listed when creating a new Ad Set

Meta now recommends “Maximize number of qualified leads” as the Performance Goal for Instant Form campaigns when your Facebook account is connected to a CRM through the Meta Conversions API. Meta needs to receive conversion events it can match to leads from your ads. If it doesn’t, the option stays greyed out or unavailable, and the CRM connection status may show as pending.

To fix this, update the Lead Stage field of a real lead that came from the Facebook  Lead Ad received in your Privyr account. Updating the Lead Stage of test leads and sending the events back to Meta may not count toward completing the CRM connection.

Once Meta receives events from a real lead from your Facebook Lead Ads, the option should become available when creating a new Ad Set.

Here are the options to set up your Ad Set on your Ads Manager:

  1. Conversion Location: Instant forms
  2. Performance Goal: Maximise number of qualified leads
  3. Dataset: “<Page_Name> Event Data”
  4. Conversion Event: the lead stage you want to optimise on (for example, Meeting Booked or Closed Won)

I can’t manually connect a preferred Dataset to Privyr

When you connect your Facebook account to Privyr, Meta creates a new Dataset for each Facebook Page, and that Dataset is used for the Meta Conversions API integration. Switching to a different or existing Dataset isn’t available.

To check which Dataset is connected:

  1. Open your Meta Conversions API page in Privyr.
  2. Tap View Pages and Datasets.

I can’t select multiple stages under Conversion Events when creating a new Ad Set.

With the new version of the Meta Conversions API integration, Meta lets you pick the single stage you consider the most valuable or relevant stage for good-quality leads, and it optimises your ads to find high-quality conversion leads like the ones that reach that stage.

Meta has confirmed that optimising on a single event is more effective, since it gives their system a clear signal of what a qualified lead looks like. Choose the stage that best reflects a quality lead for your business.

Note: Configuring the Sales Funnel in Meta Events Manager is no longer required. You can now choose a single conversion event for Meta to optimise on when creating a new Ad Set.
